The Monday (Tuesday) Mixtape #8 By Jon K

Posted: Eoin MacManus /

This week's Monday Mixtape has been kindly contributed by Jon K one-time face behind the counter at the, now sadly defunct, Fat City record shop, and resident dj at discerning dances like Eyes Down and Hoya:Hoya. A man of wide ranging musical taste, the selection he's chosen here's a slice of oddball ace-ness - taking wonky dancehall and dub as it's starting point and veering off into punk, new-wave, house, techno, italo… a melting pot of genres which we'll let him explain the inspiration for:

"I was unwillingly fed a load of Bauhaus, Eno, Talking Heads, Japan etc. via my sister in the 80's, and although I thought a lot of it was rubbish at the time I've made up for it since. I always liked Reggae, but the Dancehall thing came a bit later... I heard Supercat and that was that… I guess the main inspiration for the mix was that golden period, when Reggae and Punk were crossing over regularly, the connection's been pretty well documented. One of my favorite characters from then was / is Linton Kwesi Johnson… I've just realised there's nothing of his on this, to make up for it the mix is named after his tune Want fi goh rave".

In addition to his regular dj endeavours Jon also heads up SnipSnap Music - a music research and synchronisation agency, working within the film & TV industry.

If your in Manchester you can catch Jon playing down at Soup Kitchen every third Saturday of the month.
