Edwin

Following the Second World War a young Japanese chap named Mr Tsunemi developed an unhealthy obsession with denim jeans. With no manufacturing of denim in Japan at the time, he had to import old, worn out jeans from America which he would then repair and sell on.

His dream though, was to make his own denim jeans. The emergence of poor quality Japanese denim early in the 1950's only served to fuel Mr Tsunemi's obsession. Following extensive research and plenty of practical experience Mr Tsunemi set up Edwin in 1961. The idea behind the name was a reworking of the word 'denim' with the letter 'm' being turned upside down to make a 'w', and the word Edwin being formed.

From that point on, the integrity of the brand has been of paramount importance and the emphasis on quality remains strong.

In 1963, Edwin produced the heaviest (16oz) ringspun denim jeans, featuring the famous three colour rainbow selvedge, which are still used today. The legend goes that these jeans were so strong, they would stand up on their own even after washing!

Edwin are also famous as one of the few denim brands still hand-dying their cotton with natural Indigo, harvested from the plantations in the traditional Indigo growing region of Tokushima. This gives Edwin jeans a richer and more natural colour than the chemical dyes which became popular in the late 60s.

Edwin have been the number one denim company in Japan since 1983, but it doesn't stop there - their fanatical attention to detail is evident across their range. The sweatshirts, knits and jackets are superbly finished and the more you look at them, the more you will appreciate the amount of work that has gone into each and every garment.
