Le Coq Sportif, or ‘the sporty rooster’ for those of you who can’t speak French, was founded in 1882 by Émile Camuset. Originally focusing on making clothes for track and field athletes, the brand soon branched out into the other sporting avenues of cycling and football. With a forward thinking approach which led to such sporty innovations as skin-tight jerseys and track-suits, the brand quickly took off, and by sponsoring a large number of sports teams, by the 1950s the brand could be seen on playing fields everywhere around the world. In 1951 Le Coq Sportif became the exclusive outfitter for the Tour de France meaning that the jerseys worn by the leader and the king of the mountains all sported the trademark rooster logo.
