Karhu

Finland isn’t just the home of the sauna and miserable filmmakers, it’s also the birthplace of Karhu – one of the unsung heroes of the trainer world. Karhu first deployed their wares in the 20s and were just about the speediest things you could get their hands on back then, propelling Finnish runner Paavo Nurmi to win a knee-shattering nine gold medals in 1924. In the years since, they’ve pioneered plenty of trainer tech, including, but not limited to, the world’s first air cushioned running shoe midsole. It’s also worth noting that Kahru were the brand that originally came up with the ‘three stripes’ and, in their words, “sells its trademark to a now well-known athletic shoe company that still uses it to this day”. Wonder who that could be.
