Worth a Watch: Don Whillans’ Last Climb

Published: Wed Oct 22 2014

Anyone who’s lurked on here before probably recognises the name Don Whillans. He was the hard drinking Salford mountaineer who climbed alongside Sir Chris Bonington before receiving the honourable accolade of having a Cottonopolis parka named after him.

This film here follows Don and his old climbing partner Joe Brown as they struggle to scale the notorious Cemetry Gates in Snowdonia — over thirty years after they first climbed the route. They’re hardly in their prime, but that’s probably part of the charm.
