M.H.L. by Margaret Howell
Margaret Howell attended Goldsmith’s College, University of London and graduated in 1969 with a Fine Art degree. Following her graduation Margaret began designing accessories and inspired by a beautifully made vintage shirt found at a jumble sale Margaret soon realised the only way to produce such high quality clothing was to build her own workroom which opened in 1970, followed by a franchise store in 1977 and the the first Margaret Howell owned store in 1980.
Taking a classic item and reinterpreting it by altering the cut, detailing and choice of fabric and making it relevant for today is fundamental to the Margaret Howell creative philosophy of designing clothes with a modern edge and contemporary feel. The function of each garment dictates the design and details are kept to a minimum.
The Margaret Howell creative mission is to design clothes for detail driven people who are looking for something modern but not overly designed. M.H.L. in particular does this job brilliantly.
'My design philosophy has always been simple. I like to make high quality clothes based on classic British traditions, but with a contemporary feel. There are people who do not wish to feel self conscious because of their clothes and I feel such a person responds to clothes that last beyond one season. My clothes are like art, I design carefully edited collections balancing fashion and tradition with individual pieces designed to last and I hope these items will be regarded as the best of their kind'.
