Cottonopolis
Almost ten years after opening our first shop on Manchester's Tib Street, Oi Polloi are launching their own brand - Cottonopolis. The term 'Cottonopolis' was first coined as a nick name for Manchester around the time of the industrial revolution — a reference to the leading role the region played in fabric production and England's emerging rag-trade.
The highlight of our first Cottonopolis collection is a classic four-pocket parka — made just a stones throw from our Manchester base. Named after the flawed local mountaineer Don 'The Villain' Whillans, the Whillans Parka comes in a variety of colours and fabrics.
Alongside the Whillans Parka sits some Italian-made marl knitwear in the shape of the Elbow Patch Crew Knit, and an impressive range of English-made leather belts.
Overall the aim with the Cottonopolis brand is to reference our personal influences - design classics, different styles and eras, re-interpreting them, tweaks and twists we feel make them relevant... fabric, cut, colour. The devils in the details.
