Levi Strauss, the inventor of the quintessential America garment- the blue jean- was born in Buttenheim, Bavaria in 1829. The family immigrated to New York and Levi joined his other brothers in the wholesale dry goods family business "J. Strauss Brother & Co”. When news of the California Gold Rush made it's way east, Levi then moved to San Francisco to make his fortune, not by panning for gold, but by opening stores to outfit the miners. Eventually their families began to populate the Western regions.
In 1872, Levi received a letter from Jacob Davis, one of Levi's regular customers. In the letter, he told Levi about an interesting way he made pants for his customers.
