In 1916, the U.S. Rubber Company converged with Goodyear (of today's tyre fame) to form a new company. With the demand for rubber-soled footwear increasing, they decided to produce an entirely new rubber-soled shoe.
Initially called 'Peds' (Latin for foot), the name had already been trademarked and they finally settled on the name Keds. It was also Keds' advertising agency that was credited with popularizing the term 'sneakers', because the rubber soles made the shoes quiet.
